About us

The Kotzé Family opened  their first fabric shop in Saldanha and Moorreesburg in 1989. After completing school and National Service, Willim Kotzé opened more branches in Ceres and Beaufort West.

Willim Kotzé saw a need in the market for sewing machine technicians and did his in-house training at AFSEW in Cape Town during 1992-1993.

All four branches were brought together into one business in Durbanville. The Kotzé family passionately grew in the textile- and sewing machine industry as the Durbanville-merge strengthened the family in serving the sewing industry. During this time the family also served various fabric shops in South Africa by purchasing fabric in bulk from local factories, which was sold in their retail outlet and offering wholesale prices to fabric shops.

The year 2000 brought a big change as the Durbanville shop was sold and the family relocated to Hazyview to manage their tourism company and yet another fabric and sewing shop was opened in Hazyview, serving the Lowveld.

Willim & Maria Kotzé

In 2013, Willim and Maria Kotzé opened the Vaal Triangle branch where they focused on machine sales, services and repairs. They also started Quiltsew’s quilting division. In 2015 we moved the Hazyview branch (which was managed by Johan & Magda) to Vereeniging as Johan and Magda Kotzé retired for a more relaxed lifestyle.

Quiltsew now boasts a broad selection of Quilting fabrics and accessories and has expanded into selling second hand machines, embroidery machines, equipment and spares.

Upcoming sewing machine technicians are trained in the workshop under Willim’s hand and he was appointed master technician for PFAFF in 2018. Willim also keeps up to date with new technology by attending technical training from the office in Sweden.

In 2019 Maria Kotzé completed a teaching accreditation course with the South African National Quilting guild and in January 2020 she completed her StitchWitch sewing teacher accreditation.

2020 brought big changes to the structure of the business as QUILTSEW registered as PTY LTD from a sole-ownership in order to register as an essential service to be able to serve the community in the production of masks and PPE during the Covid-19 pandemy. The staff consists of the following persons: Willim Kotzé (director); Maria Kotzé (sales, admin and accredited teacher), Codey Calitz (technician and machine sales), Michelle Basson (general sales assistant and marketing), Nikara Chellan (general sales assistant and stock control) and Willim Kotzé jr (workshop & spares assistant).

Quiltsew saw the need to bring a larger variety of quilting fabric and accessories into the South African market and also expanded the business into the import of various items to serve the community and offer a better variety to South African quilters and sewing enthusiasts.

Quiltsew also started their online shop at the end of 2020. The location between Vereeniging and Vanderbijlpark is accessible to persons from the Vaal Triangle as well as surrounding areas: Security Mecca Building, 72 Joubert street, Vereeniging.
